UFC Champion Jamahal Hill Forfeits Title Following Basketball Game Achilles Rupture

Following a ruptured Achilles tendon that will require surgery and a long period of recovery, UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill has announced he’s relinquishing his title.

UFC light heavyweight titleholder Jamahal Hill recently announced a major setback in his career. Hill has sustained a ruptured Achilles tendon and will subsequently undergo surgery. The unfortunate injury will force him to abdicate his UFC light heavyweight championship. Hill made this announcement through his YouTube channel.

In his announcement, Hill commented, “I have unfortunately suffered an injury… It’s one that will require surgery and will require time and rehab, and will cause me to be out for some time. As Jiri Prochazka gave up the belt due to an injury, I will do the same to keep the division moving forward”. The biggest thing he’s focusing on now is his recovery, ensuring he can fully heal to continue being the fighter everyone knows. For this, he needs to emphasize healing, readiness, and rehab. Sources remark that Hill received his injury during a basketball match between several fighters that took place ahead of UFC 290 in Las Vegas.

Hill now faces a challenging recovery from surgery before a return timeline can be ascertained. Typically, recovery from an Achilles injury can take from eight to twelve months, potentially longer if rehabilitation is needed. This unfortunate incident dramatically affects Hill’s career as the 205-pound champion, having won this title recently in January over Glover Teixeira. The light heavyweight division is now in limbo, as it was expected that Hill would face Prochazka in late 2023.

Despite giving up the belt, in his video, Hill expresses that the UFC fully supports his decision and assures him a chance at the title again after healing. Hill remains positive, stating, “The show must go on, and I’m not exempt from that”. He is assured that when he’s able to return from his injury, there will be a title shot ready for him, “It’s just part of the story”, Hill adds. As for the uncertain future of the light heavyweight title, it is rumored that Prochazka may return before the end of the year.
