UFC London: Tom Aspinall reacts to Jon Jones’ Tweet, feels patronized

MMA fighter Tom Aspinall aims for a dream fight against former champion Jon Jones, who has been known for his sarcastic reactions to potential threats, following Aspinall’s comeback win over Marcin Tybura at UFC London.

A common feature that MMA fans watch out for after UFC events is the reaction of Jon Jones, the former light heavyweight kingpin, to possible threats. Known for providing commentary on contenders, Jones usually uses the opportunity to send digs their way especially when they celebrate an ascent on the UFC ladder. His reaction, or perhaps non-reaction, to Tom Aspinall’s significant comeback win over Marcin Tybura at UFC London, was an insouciant, “sounds good lol.”

Aspinall responded to Jones’ comment during an appearance on The MMA Hour, humorously pointing out Jones’ patronizing tone. Despite the heavyweight champion’s established pattern of mocking his competitors, Aspinall expressed his disapproval of Jones’ lack of concern about his achievements. Jones’ history includes numerous instances of contenders calling him out, only to fail on their way to the title; Aspinall added that while he could be the next in line for this, he may also prove to be a genuine threat.

Meanwhile, Jones’ upcoming bout is with Stipe Miocic at UFC 295, a face-off that sets a universally acknowledged pound-for-pound king against the most decorated UFC heavyweight champion in history. This match, according to Jones, could be his last in the octagon. He hinted at retiring after the Madison Square Garden event. Aspinall expressed a hope for this not to be so; he made it clear his vision encompassed him as a unique challenger to Jones.

Aspinall also disclosed plans to challenge the winner of the UFC Paris event between Ciryl Gane and Serghei Spivac, a choice he realizes could backfire if Spivac, whom he previously beat, emerged victorious. Moreover, Sergei Pavlovich, who is currently on a winning spree, could be a suitable title eliminator for Jones. Aspinall revealed that his ultimate goal, despite his focus on Jones, was to hold the UFC heavyweight title. He emphasized his readiness to face anyone, highlighting that defeating Jones would only be an added bonus.
