UFC Singapore: Korean Zombie Uncertain About Retirement, Depends on Performance

MMA fighter Chan Sung Jung, also known as The Korean Zombie, who was considering retirement after a loss to Alexander Volkanovski, is scheduled to fight Max Holloway at UFC Singapore and has stated he is unsure about his retirement plans post-fight.

The Korean Zombie, whose real name is Chan Sung Jung, may not be ready to retire from fighting just yet. This Saturday, he’s set to face Max Holloway in the main event of UFC Singapore. Jung’s last fight took place at UFC 273, during which he endured a severe beating from Alexander Volkanovski. This severe loss led him to consider retirement. However, when Holloway invited him to fight earlier this year, Jung’s mindset shifted. With the upcoming fight in sight, he’s stated that he might not be quite ready to hang up his gloves.

During the UFC Singapore media day, Jung expressed uncertainty about his future in fighting. “I’m not really sure what’s going to happen,” Jung said via an interpreter. He described the struggle many fighters face in coming to terms with the end of their careers, stating that he’ll have to assess his performance in the upcoming fight before making any decisions.

Jung is a highly respected figure in the fighting world, with several impressive achievements to his name. He was the first fighter to secure a Twister submission in the UFC and has earned nine performance bonuses throughout his career so far. Additionally, his 2012 victory over Dustin Poirier earned him Fight of the Year. As one of the last fighters from the generation of featherweights who emerged alongside Jose Aldo, Jung is eager to square off with Holloway, another legend in the field.

Interestingly, despite Jung’s anticipation for the fight, the odds are seemingly against him. Based on betting odds of -750, Holloway is favored to win with an implied win probability of 88.2 percent. However, Jung remains undeterred. He said, “I respect Max, he’s a living legend. But just because I respect him does not mean I’m going to go easy on him. I expect to win this fight. I’m going to go hard on him.” Jung, undeterred by discussions of retirement or betting odds, is determined to give his all in the upcoming match.
