Usman Nurmagomedov, after initially dismissing Paul Hughes as a challenger, acknowledged Hughes’ skill and toughness following a hard-fought majority decision victory at PFL Dubai, which pushed Nurmagomedov to a new level in his undefeated career.
Usman Nurmagomedov has finally put a name to the face: Paul Hughes.
Saturday night was intense. In the main event of PFL Dubai, Nurmagomedov faced Hughes. It was a five-round battle, ending with Nurmagomedov barely clinching a majority decision win. Before the fight, he dismissed Hughes, claiming he wasn’t worthy. But now? He’s singing a different tune.
Post-fight, after what many are calling a Fight of the Year contender, Nurmagomedov had some words. He admitted Hughes is no pushover.
“Paul Hughes, brother,” Nurmagomedov said, “You are the man. Really, you are tough. I underestimated you. Whew! My mistake. But hey, still undefeated, undisputed, Bellator lightweight champ, Usman Nurmagomedov.”
Nurmagomedov entered as the heavy favorite—undefeated and reigning Bellator lightweight champion. Yet, Hughes gave him trouble early on. Defending takedowns and landing body shots, Hughes turned it into a gritty brawl. Despite a point deduction for low blows in round three, Nurmagomedov persevered. He credits Hughes for pushing him to new limits.
“His wrestling defense was solid,” Nurmagomedov said. “He’s strong—didn’t expect that strength! You told me during face-offs; my bad for not listening. Thanks so much.”
“I’ve never taken damage like this before,” he continued. “My body’s aching all over. Brother, thanks for the fight. I leveled up because of you. And I’m sure you did too. Much respect to you, Paul.”
This victory keeps Nurmagomedov’s record pristine at 19-0 with 1 No-Contest.
