If you were to ask me two or even three years ago what was one of the most entertaining divisions in the UFC, I would certainly say the heavyweight division.
There was a point in time that the heavyweight division had some clarity but there seems to be a lot of confusion regarding what’s next for who. Even more, a trilogy battle between Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic has not been announced.
Chael Sonnen in his “Bad Guy Inc” talk spoke about how frustrating the heavyweight division currently is.
Daniel Cormier lost his UFC Heavyweight Title to Stipe Miocic at UFC 241. Post-fight, Cormier said he needed time to re-evaluate what he wanted next. Miocic also has been sidelined to do eye surgery. Cormier in an interview with ESPN in late 2019 made it clear that only 1 fight interests him and that is a 3rd fight with Miocic.
Francis Ngannou is another heavyweight who deserves a title shot. He has pleaded on more than one occasion that he wants the title shot next but is getting tired of waiting on the UFC. So much so that he recently took a fight against Jairzinho Rozenstruik set to headline UFC on ESPN 8 March 28th. Rozenstruik has been a hot rising heavyweight who with a victory himself can make a case for the title shot.
Another topic Sonnen spoke about was the possibility of Jon Jones moving up to heavyweight. Boy, wouldn’t that add to the complexity of the possible ‘what ifs’ which hover the heavyweight division?
