Ray Borg to Move up to Bantamweight

MMA Junkie

Ray Borg’s time at flyweight seems to be numbered. Borg missed weight for his recent flyweight fight against Rogerio Bontorin by two lbs. Bontorin was ranked seventh in the flyweight division.  MMANews.com Eric Kowal reports that Borg will not be eligible for the flyweight rankings and will move up to bantamweight.

Borg defeated Bontorin by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 167 this past Saturday. He is on a two-fight win streak in the flyweight division, with his last win being against Gabriel Silva at UFC on ESPN 4 on July 20, 2019. Borg missed weight three times at flyweight and also missed weight at bantamweight. When Borg missed weight against Casey Kenney at bantamweight, he vowed that he would “Leave the sport of MMA forever” on his Instagram that has now been removed.

MMA Junkie transcribed a post-fight conference Borg did with the media after his win over Bontorin. In the post-fight conference Borg spoke about his weight cut and said, “I need to talk it over with my manager and with the UFC, but me personally, I think 125 is good for me.” Borg then went on to say, “I don’t feel like it had anything to do with discipline, I’ve learned to man up to my mistakes and accept accountability. If there is one thing I can say is that it wasn’t discipline, not being in the right weight, it was just the system not working for me.” Borg explained that the weight cut was going great, but he couldn’t cut the remaining pounds left to get to 125.

While Borg feels comfortable at flyweight, he has no issue moving up to bantamweight. In the post-fight conference, Borg said: “I don’t have a problem at 135; I can compete with guys that size.” Borg’s only fight at bantamweight in the UFC was a loss to Kenney by unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 2 on March 30, 2019. Borg win over Bontorin would’ve put him in the top ten in the flyweight division if he made weight. Now Borg will have to find his way in the bantamweight division.
